Guidelines For Writing An Effective Essay Introduction
A lot of people take the introduction for granted. They think that they can just throw something together last minute and it will be effective. This is not the case when writing an effective essay. The introduction is so important because it is where you will catch your reader’s attention and give them the background information that is needed so that they can understand the rest of the information. Here are the guidelines to help you write an effective essay.
- 1. Start off with a catchy fact
- 2. Present background information
- 3. Define terms
- 4. Write a thesis
You should start out your paper by catching the attention of your audience. You can do this by finding an alarming fact that you read about while you were conducting your research. The idea is to find something that will affect as many people as possible. For example, if you are talking about scarcity, you may start it with a fact stating that if the corn crop was destroyed, our economy would come to a standstill. A statement like that would affect everyone and would make the reader want to find out how the destruction of corn relates to the internet.
The next part of your paper is designed to give any background information that may be needed to help the reader understand the concepts that you will be discussing in your paper. You will need to set the stage for your paper and for the things that you are going to discuss so that if the reader has never heard about the topic before, they can still understand your paper.
If there are any terms that relate specifically to your topic, it may be necessary to make sure that you define them in your introduction. If it relates to your topic and you need to know what it means and it isn’t a common term, then you should include the definition in your paper.
Your thesis will be the answer to your research question and can include the reasons why, which you will talk about in the body of your paper, as well. This will be the main point of your paper and is called a thesis. It should make a general statement that will include the reasons behind it. You will prove this point throughout your paper and the essay will surround this main point.
