Selecting Original Persuasive Essay Topics

Writing papers for high school, college and grad school is as definitive an experience as it is divisive. On the one hand, you have those who love to write papers, either starting weeks in advance and carefully plotting things the whole way through or (in true English major fashion) wait until the last minute and then test their mental mettle in a race against the clock, just for fun (at least that’s what we tell ourselves.) On the other end of the spectrum, however, are those to whom paper writing is a chore, persuasive paper writing even more so.

However, that doesn’t have to be the case. Good paper writing always begins with a good, strong topic and thesis. But the question remains—how do you come up with and select a good persuasive essay topic? Here are a few easy tips to help you out.

Step #1: Relax

A novel suggestion, perhaps, but it works. And anyway, you just can’t write well when you’re tensed up. Do something to relieve tension when you get stuck thinking about a paper topic, relax, and, most importantly of all, come back to your paper topic later and maintain that same relaxed attitude.

Step #2: Clear Your Mind

Even if you’re not a writer, chances are you’ve heard of writer’s block. Even the best of us run up against a wall sometimes when searching for a paper topic. In situations like this, sometimes the best thing to do is to clear your mind with something that can help take the pressure off. Listen to music, take in a ballgame on TV, watch reruns of those same old sitcoms over and over…your brain will continue to work on the problem on a subconscious level, and eventually you might stumble across something that gives you the perfect persuasive paper topic.

Step #3: When in Doubt, Look to the Masters

If you’re truly stuck and don’t know what to do when it comes time to find a persuasive essay topic, you may want to see how others have tackled the subject. Ultimately, a persuasive essay topic is going to come from you, and be your own work, but there’s nothing wrong with looking at examples and trying to glean a greater understanding or appreciation of your craft from that. Whether it’s a professional essay or just looking over an A paper a friend got last semester, sometimes a good example can be a great launching point for your own persuasive paper.
